Bank Holiday

Another Bank Holiday has come around and this weekend is the big weekend for gardening.  My garden has been sorely neglected in the past few weeks as I was busy with exams at work, and it needed a bit of an overhaul.  I had managed to sow some seeds a few weeks ago, just sunflowers and sweet peas, which I had tended on the kitchen windowsill.  Spot the difference:

Mr Fothergill's seeds from the garden centre:

Verve seeds from B&Q:

(B&Q may be getting a strongly worded letter from me)

Anyway, I planned to sort out the garden this weekend so I got up bright and early on Saturday to make a start.

I deadheaded the camellia, weeded the borders, trimmed the edges of the lawn, planted the bedding plants, planted the sunflowers and sweet peas, emptied spring pots and heeled in the bulbs, planted up new pots and hanging baskets, top dressed existing permanent pots, sowed some annuals (Flanders poppies, cornflowers and love-in-a-mist), planted strawberry plants and finally watered everything and sprinkled slug pellets.  By 5.00pm I was shattered.

Yesterday I found that I'm too old for all day gardening.

I couldn't move!

Tudors on Tour

A couple of weekends ago we went to Tatton Park to see "The Tudors on Tour" presented by Royal Historic Palaces.  Henry VIII arrived on progress with his queen, Katherine of Aragon:

We watched Tudor craftsmen at work:

We watched plays by Tudor actors (very funny) and then watched the jousting:

Then the weather turned cold and wet, so after eating our picnic standing up, we huddled round the roasting pit for warmth:

Tried our hands at archery with a crossbow:

And then returned home to get warm and dry.

It would have been a great day if the weather hadn't let us down, but we're English, so we just wear fleeces and waterproofs and get on with it, so still an enjoyable day out.

Birthday Cake no. 8

Back up and running with my new laptop and just as busy as ever.  I can't believe that I actually booked daugher's birthday party with her friends this weekend, when I am in the middle of exams at work and have a three hour rehearsal on Sunday, but I did.  Must be losing my touch.

I also told her that I would make her a pinata cake for her party.

Must be losing my marbles.

This has taken some organising.

So, over four nights this week I have: coloured icing, bakes sponges, whipped up buttercream, assembled sponges, iced cake and finally decorated it and here's the result:

The centre of the cake is filled with Smarties which emerge when the cake is cut:

If anyone else is mad enough to decide to make one, here's the recipe.

Back in the 21st Century

After a terrible shock last week when my laptop gave up the ghost (motherboard, apparently), I picked myself up and bought a new laptop.  A purple one!

The lovely IT bloke at school retrieved my data from the old one and said he would put it on the new one for me.

So on Thursday I told him I'd bought a purple one.

"What's the spec?"  he asked.

"You've missed the point," I said, "It's PURPLE!"

Yes, he laughed at me.

Anyway, apart from getting to grips with Windows 8.1 (wtf is going on?) and a touch pad, oh, and trying to work out how to import my music files to i-tunes, and how to uninstall all the crapware that seems to have attached itself to my laptop, I'm nearly back to normal.

How did we live before all this technology?

Deep Depression

I'm in a deep depression.

My laptop has died.

With my entire life on it.

The lovely techy boys at work are looking at it.

Hopefully they can restore me to this:

Fingers crossed.
