The secret of our marriage? GSOH

On our anniversary last month my MIL came round to give us a card and her usual lecture. The one about how we were too young to get married when we did. Or rather, her son was too young to get married (we were 23). Then she turned to me and said:

"If it wasn't working, would you stick it out?"

"What do you mean?" chipped in husband, "We've been sticking it out for 17 years!"

(Husband and I rolled about laughing; I don't think she saw the funny side!)

Not sure if MIL keeps you sane, or is that hysterical laughter I hear? Poor woman.

Ermm, has she not noticed that more than a decade and a half has past since her fateful pronouncments of doooooooooom.

I have one like that. Such a joy.

The Dotterel - if it ever came to that, I would try and sort it out rather than stick it out. Tooooooo horrid to even contemplate!

Moannie - I do sometimes feel sorry for her when she doesn't get our sense of humour, but at least we have one!

Sarah - believe it or not, we've now been married for as long as she was (very sadly, she was widowed quite young), but she still thinks of us as newlyweds!

What a loaded question. I would asked for the variables..."well, what's he look like? does he do the dishes? Would he take me to a chick flick?"

Happy Belated Anniversary!

at least your husband is on your side - be very thankful for that. Mine isn't and it is only half as much fun laughing at MIL alone!!!!!

Did she have a glimmer of hope in her eye that you would say no and give back her boy?!!!!

You'd have to stick it out just to spite her...

that would be on account of the fact that she doesn't appear to have a sense of humour!

hahaha! Love it! I found you via another blog roll - glad I did. I love that your MIL asks such an inane question. It's just so, well, insulting. Still I guess that's what they're for (you probably get on really well with her and I'm way off the mark - sorry!).

hah!

17 years? congratulations! My parents have a funny married anniversary story too. On their 11th, dad thought it was their 10th and bought a card thinking my mom for 10 wonderful years. The joke that they'd had 10 wonderful years and 1 miserable one in there somewhere developed. We still joke about it. Mom will say "It's our 35th anniversary. That's 34 wonderful years!" Hubs and I have stuck it out for... um... (counting on fingers) 12 years (that's 11 wonderful years!).

17 years is awesome and personally I do not think you were THAT young...I was 19 and have been married 26 years and do not regret it one bit! It's been great with some highs and some lows but the highs always overtake the lows! Congrats!

Why do parents always seem to think they have the right to meddle in the lives of their grown up children.
