My heart goes boom diddy boom diddy boom diddy boom .........

So why am I at home on a Thursday? Because yesterday I had, shall we say, an interesting day and have been told to stay at home today.

Yesterday morning at about 4.20am I was woken up by a strange and increasing pain in my chest. Following that was shortness of breath and feeling cold and clammy, yet sweating. Something was not right. It was not indegestion and it was not a pulled muscle. It was inside and it was hurting.

Husband called an ambulance and five minutes later the paramedics arrived. After an ECG showed an irregular heartbeat I was taken to hospital. After about 30 minutes the pain abated and by lunchtime I felt fine. The hospital ran further tests, subsequent ECGs were normal and luckily they found nothing sinister. After 12 hours in hospital I was allowed to go home.

I have to go back in about a week to see a consultant. Let's hope he has some simple, insignificant answer such as 'just a panic attack'.

I did want to go back to school today and get back to normal, but my Head of Department forbade it so I just popped in when I took Izzy to school and picked up some marking (there is always marking!). I think I need to keep busy. So I've been to the library, I've done some ironing, watched Strictly It Takes Two from Tuesday and now I'm doing computer related stuff like signing up for the Radio Times free audiobook from Audible.co.uk, ordering the Tesco shop and checking our bank account, oh, and a bit of blogging.

Do you think I can get away with putting a second coat on the hall and landing ceilings?

Just use the day to chill! Your consultant will probably tell you that lots of people have irregular heart beats, youre right, but if you're really worried you should have other tests to rule out the scary things.

Sometimes we (mum's) feel too guilty relaxing. Today you have been given time to relax, do some things for you, like read, have a nice walk (weather is better than yesterday!), have a hot bath or a hot shower. Might be just what you need. x

I often get an irregular heartbeat which makes me wonder if I will pass out. My daughter gets it too. We have both been told to ease up on caffeine.

Michelloui - Good advice, I think I'll start on one of the library books.

Maggie - thank you so much for that. Just knowing that others have irregular heartbeats makes it seem more normal. I know that caffeine does affect me in this way because I was having palpatations earlier this year, so I have cut down on caffeine and taken up with Twinings herbal teas.

Family Affairs - I don't think I know the meaning of 'relax', I'm just one of those people who like to be busy!

Same thing happened to me six years ago, ambulance and all...

You should relax more!!!

Panic attacks are horrible things, have a day pampering yourself and try to cut a few corners...

Yikes! Enjoy your day off - I like the idea of spending the day reading (it's what I would do, given half a chance!) I'm sure taking it easy for a couple of days is going to be the best medicine.

My student friends (now GPs) used to joke that the answer to all patients was to take a paracetemol and put your feet up...

My mom suffers from panic attacks, and I can say that they are not fun. Please do what everyone else says and relax!

The stress of relaxing. That's a tricky one to deal with.

How about some yoga... knitting... making time for doing things you enjoy. I know - BLOGGING!

Please look after yourself! School can wait (although I completely understand about the marking...)
