Life certainly does begin at 40

For my birthday weekend we went here, Armathwaite Hall, in the Lake District:

The hotel was beautiful and husband had arranged champagne and flowers in our room on arrival so I felt thoroughly spoiled. Then we all had a wonderful seven course dinner in the hotel restaurant for my birthday.

The next morning, after a swim in the hotel pool, we played some croquet on the lawn:

and then walked over to the nearby animal park where daughter did this:

We then spent a little while lounging about drinking tea (from a silver teapot with a silver strainer) and eating chocolates in the Lake View lounge of the hotel. After a quick trip into Keswick to buy daughter a new waterproof (for a school trip on Tuesday) we went back to the hotel and had another swim and a jacuzzi.

After daughter had had her dinner we tucked her up in bed and left her watching "Strictly" (with the baby listening service on) while we had another seven course dinner.

The next day we watched a falconry display on the front lawn:

had a little wander around the gardens:

and then set off home via Grasmere for some of Sarah Nelsons famous gingerbread.

What a fantastic birthday!

And what did daughter put in her news book today?

"I watched Strictly in bed"!

Glad you had a good time. All sounds wonderful but croquet in particular would make our day - it seems the embodiment of civilisation and leisure (plus my husband used to play it competitively for his college at Cambridge!)

sounds great - I'm so pleased it worked out. And don't children always manage to a)miss the point and b) embarass you in front of the teachers! (you'll have to take note to add a pinch of salt to your own students comments!)

It looks like a really cool place to go, happy 20x2!

He he he!! There's nothing quite like the honesty of children! (My two would have similar memories.)

Seven course dinners - wow! You had a magnificent treat, well deserved no doubt. Do the celebrations improve year on year? What do you have planned for your 41st?

You are almost making me look forward to my 40th...

Many Happy Returns! It sounds like you had a wonderful time.
I'm planning my 40th and have starred this post. I will leave it open on my laptop until my husband notices!

Haha - lovely. Children see things through different eyes to us. Life certainly began at 40 for me - I gave birth to my one and only child at that age!
